“Country music is all about the lyrics,” says Al Skop, lead programmer and DJ for SiriusXM The Highway. “Not only does it have to have a good tempo and beat that makes you wanna open the sunroof and GO, but it’s gotta have a good lyric that makes you want to experience something to hit the road and get away from it all for a while.” No doubt about it: Al knows what it takes to build a highly engaging road trip playlist.

Now that you’ve made it through a significant portion of the country, from Wendover, UT to Grand Junction, CO, you’re probably facing a lot of, as the Dixie Chicks once sang, Wide Open Spaces. Once it’s just you, the car, and not much else, Al suggests switching on Florida Georgia Line’s Cruise, which is, in his words “undeniable.” “It’s just the epitome of what a driving song should be. It’s called ‘Cruise,’ for cryin’ out loud.”

When asked what makes a truly great road trip song, Al insists that the best tracks talk about “something you can relate to.” “Country music does a pretty good job of describing the car that you’re in and the person that’s in the passenger seat with you. It makes you think back to when you took a road trip and makes you want to take another one.”

As for his own experiences on the road, Al just likes “being able to plan out where you’re going on each stop, but making sure you leave room for spontaneity.” Because of “that certain detour that proves to be the highlight of the trip one day.”
