Wade Wilson has been Tony Romo’s position coach for the last 10 of his 14 seasons as the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback.

That makes Wilson a pretty good authority on the mark Romo left during his NFL career, which ended with his decision Tuesday to retire and enter broadcasting as a game analyst for CBS.

‘The best thing that I can say about a quarterback is he elevates the players around him, and he did that for the better part of 10 years’

“I think he’s been a phenomenal player,” Wilson, himself a former NFL quarterback, told Tom Pelissero and Bill Polian on Late Hits. “The best thing that I can say about a quarterback is he elevates the players around him, and he did that for the better part of 10 years. He was like a top-five-rated quarterback for the regular season, and I know the argument’s going to be out there about a lack of postseason success.

“But I think he’s been a phenomenal player to come from where he came from, Eastern Illinois; non-drafted, and earn a job and then become a starter and be as productive as he has (been) consistently over a long period of time is phenomenal for him. But I understand the argument on the other side as well.”

‘He will work his bottom off to make sure that he wants to be the best’

How will Romo do as a broadcaster? Although Wilson isn’t entirely sure of the extent of criticism the former QB will dish out when he’s behind a microphone, he is confident Romo will be good at his new job.

“I think he has a real good sense of humor and he has a great way of making a point, kind of like around the curve, so to speak,” the coach said. “But will he rip people? I don’t know. I think that he’ll evolve. The one thing I do know about Tony is he will attack broadcasting the way he attacked football. He will work his bottom off to make sure that he wants to be the best. And if it takes ripping somebody, I don’t think he’ll hold back.

‘I think he’ll bring a great insight in the broadcast booth’

“I think he’ll bring some humor, I think he’ll bring a great insight in the broadcast booth, and I think he’ll do phenomenal at it because he will work hard at that as well.”
