Trubisky: Phone never rang before Bears made him second overall pick

The phone is supposed to ring, right?

That’s how the script usually plays out when a college prospect learns he has been selected by an NFL team.

‘I thought the phone had to ring if you get picked’

It didn’t for Mitchell Trubisky. After the Chicago BearsĀ made the trade with the San Francisco 49ers to moveĀ up from the third to the second overall pick of the NFL Draft, his phone remained silent. The former North Carolina quarterback told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he didn’t learn he was joining the Bears until Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement in Philadelphia.

“The phone didn’t ring,” Trubisky said. “I didn’t even think I was going to get picked, because I thought the phone had to ring if you get picked. The commissioner just goes up to the stand and he calls my name, and it was a surreal night. I’m so excited. It’s going to be awesome for me and my family, and I can’t wait, I can’t wait.”

‘I actually had very little conversation with (the Bears)’

Trubisky was also surprised it was the Bears who chose him because he didn’t have all that much contact with them before the draft.

“It was interesting,” he said. “I actually had very little conversation with them. They must have got a lot of information besides talking to me. But I kind of had a feeling that I would end up in Chicago. I don’t know why, but, yeah, I didn’t have a lot of conversations, but I believe that organization believes in me. I’m just so happy to be a part of it.”

‘I think the coaches, they’ve seen everything they need to see in one year’

Trubisky know he will carry the stigma of only having been a one-year starter in college, with a mere 13 games under his belt. But he said the number is deceiving.

“I think coaches, they’ve seen everything they need to see in the one year,” he said. “I’ve only started 13 games, but I’m very experienced. I’ve played in 30. I went through four seasons at North Carolina, so I’ve been around the ball. I’m a student of the game. I believe nobody watches more film than I do. I always prepared like I was the starter and I continued to get better throughout my four years and I’m honestly just scratching the surface, so I still got a long ways to go and I realize that. And I have the work ethic to really do something special.”
