Tony Hale on how he ‘screwed up’ his hilarious SNL cameo with Veep co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus

On Veep, Tony Hale plays Gary, the forever loyal and much abused personal aide to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ President Selina Meyer.

As the leader of the free world’s “bag man,” Gary is at Selina’s beck and call — so it was funny and fitting when Hale popped in for a surprise cameo during Louis-Dreyfus’ Saturday Night Live monologue last weekend to hold her cue cards. (You can watch the sketch below. Let’s just say high jinks ensue when his timing is off.)

“Wasn’t that fun, man?” Hale, 45, said Monday on Dirty, Sexy, Funny with Jenny McCarthy. “They called me last week, and having my wife [makeup artist Martel Thompson] work there, I was able to go there a couple times, and I don’t know if you’ve ever been, but it is a fast environment. So I was holding her cue cards, and of course, being like my character, screwed that up, too.”

Season 5 of Veep premieres April 24 on HBO, and with Selina stressing over a tied election, it’s safe to assume Gary is in for some diva demands.

“Is there any moment though that your character Gary wants to be like, ‘You know what, just leave Gary alone?'” McCarthy asked.

“Well, he’s pretty emasculated. He’s constantly put down. But I mean, it’s like just one big codependent nightmare, and I kind of love playing it,” Hale said, laughing.

Dirty, Sexy, Funny airs weekdays at 10 am ET on SiriusXM Stars (Ch. 109).
