Less than five months out from the midterm elections, things are not looking great for the Obama administration. It’s fairly standard second-term drams, but the vexation at the White House is palpable.

President Obama is trying to battle back — sounding defiant and resolved in an interview with Brian Williams of NBC News; telling reporters in Brussels that he had “no apologies” about the Bowe Bergdahl prisoner swap.

But last week’s ABC News/Washington Post poll underscored a shift in public perceptions about the president. During his first term, polls showed Americans liked him personally even if they disliked or questioned his policies. More recently, they like what he’s saying, about income inequality, climate change and more — but they seem to have gone lukewarm to cold on Obama’s presidency.

Carrie Budoff Brown, White House reporter at Politico, joined the Press Pool with Julie Mason on SiriusXM’s POTUS channel to discuss a long-form story she wrote about Obama at this moment in his presidency.

On the subject of Bergdahl, Julie was joined by Alexis Simendinger, White House reporter for Real Clear Politics. Alexis detailed how blowback from the prisoner exchange took the administration by surprise.

Meanwhile, Adam Entous from the Wall Street Journal had fascinating, behind-the-scenes detail on how the exchange took three years of work.

The heated debate over the Bergdahl matter managed to nearly eclipse another major announcement from the White House last week on carbon emissions. Coral Davenport from The New York Times called Obama’s announcement potentially one of the most significant of his administration.

And regular listeners know how much Julie loves Frank Rich from New York Magazine. Frank has been busy with his work on the HBO series “Veep,” but he found time to write a great piece looking back at the many liberals who supported the war in Iraq, and their varying degrees of penance since then.
