The funniest person Steve Carell has ever worked with is …

It’s not Jim Carrey. It’s not Seth Rogen. It’s not Jon Stewart. It’s not even Will Ferrell or any cast member from The Office. (What?!)

Before you wonder whether Steve Carell was even awake while shooting comedy classics like Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, have a listen to the story he recently told Howard Stern about his Little Miss Sunshine co-star Alan Arkin – the actor Carell called the funniest with whom he’s worked.

“He’s so subtly funny,” Carell said. “When we were rehearsing Little Miss Sunshine … He sat in the back of the van for about two hours not saying a word. And we’re all improvising and doing things, and they’re video-taping it. We’re all exploring our characters, and he just sat there and didn’t do a thing. And finally, after two hours, we’re sitting there at a traffic light, and he starts moaning, really subtly. And after about 15 more minutes, he’s says, ‘I gotta pee.’ And it was destroying everybody.”

Carell stopped by on the Howard Stern Show to discuss his latest role as the murderer, millionaire and wrestlemaniac John du Pont in Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher. The role will be his darkest to date, and Stern – who has already seen the film – thinks the film could earn Carell an Oscar nod. In fact, Stern even offered to help nice guy Carell with his Academy Award schmooze campaign. Stern and Carell on the same ticket? They’ve got our vote.

“You know what? I would love to get nominated. I’ll be honest with you. I think it would be really, really cool,” Carell said. “I’m not really good at that sort of thing either, like working a room or talking people up. I’ll tell you, one of the main reasons it would be cool is that my folks are 89, and that would be such a cool thing for them to see.”
