During their tour stop at Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA, over the weekend, The Chicks paid tribute to the late Olivia Newton-John with a special cover. The band performed “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” Newton-John’s character Sandy’s trademark song from the 1978 film Grease.

“We lost a worldwide sweetheart last week, Olivia Newton-John,” lead singer Natalie Maines said to the audience ahead of the song. “I thought I was Olivia Newton-John from, like, [age] four until 12.”

Newton-John passed away a week ago at age 73. The news was originally shared by her husband of 14 years, John Easterling. A GRAMMY Award-winning singer famous for her role in Grease, Newton-John had had a decades-long battle with cancer and established the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund in 2020 to help sponsor global research into plant medicine for cancer.
