That time Neil Patrick Harris turned down a role in American Horror Story

Did you know: Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka were this close to a role in the first season of American Horror Story?

As part of a SiriusXM Town Hall event that airs Friday 10/17 at 1 pm ET on Entertainment Weekly Radio, EW editor Matt Bean, the moderator of the event, asked Harris whether there are any notable roles the Gone Girl star has turned down.

Naturally, that led to talk of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.

“Relatively recently, David and I had both been in the third Harold and Kumar movie, Harold and Kumar go to Christmas town – that’s not the title – but it was about the holidays,” Harris said. “And in it, he plays, sort of, my drug dealer, and I really am straight, and we’ve been pretending that we’re gay, it’s a very sort of meta-joke. And we have a terrible relationship, and we’re shouting at each other, and it’s awful.”

Shortly after that movie, Harris and Burtka were offered another role together.

“We were asked to be in season one of this great new show called American Horror Story,” Harris said. “And the idea was that we would be a gay couple that, as it turns out, were murdered in this house, and then our ghosts are around for the thing.”

“But we had just played ourselves as a couple not getting along,” Harris continued. “And I thought, it just seems weird to do that twice, as individual actors, to play a couple that hate each other twice, it just felt weird. So I said, ‘No,’ that we shouldn’t do it. And David wanted to, and I said, I just don’t want us to be known as a couple that don’t like each other, that seems weird.”

Of course, American Horror Story turned out to be a hit on FX, and has since been renewed for a fifth season.

Maybe a fifth season featuring Harris and Burtka?

“We’re big followers and fans of that show, and fingers crossed, we may get to be on it some day,” Harris told Bean.
