After 11-time GRAMMY Award winner Taylor Swift revealed that she’d be embarking on a 2023 U.S. stadium tour, Swifties around the globe geared up to buy tickets during the Verified Fan Presale, Capital One Presale and general on-sale throughout the week of November 14.

Unfortunately, Taylor’s star power proved to be too strong. Even after nearly doubling the number of tour stops after the initial announcement, demand for tickets far outpaced availability. According to Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino, 1.5 million fans were given access to the Verified Fan Presale on Tuesday, but the Ticketmaster website saw 3.5 billion visits from fans, scalpers and bots alike. This unprecedented traffic caused multiple issues with the ticket-buying website, and Swifties took to social media and the streets to voice their disappointment in the experience.

For fans who failed to get tickets in either presale, all hope rested on Friday’s public on-sale — which was then suddenly canceled. “Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow’s public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled,” Ticketmaster tweeted Thursday afternoon.

A record-breaking 2.4 million tickets did sell — the most “ever sold in one day in history,” Rapino said. But that still left room for a lot of disappointed fans who were waiting on Taylor to speak on the situation.

Today, Taylor took to Instagram Stories to make a public comment on the situation. “It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans,” she wrote. “We’ve been doing this for decades together and over the years, I’ve brought so many elements of my career in house.”

Regarding Ticketmaster, she added, “It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties … I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could.”

She continued, “It’s truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them. And to those who didn’t get tickets, all I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for us to all get together and sing these songs.”

The 2023 tour is Taylor’s first since 2018, after her east and west coast Lover Fest dates were canceled in light of them pandemic, which lead to even more pent-up demand. Even though she recently released her tenth album, Midnights — which broke streaming, physical and vinyl album sales around the world — the tour won’t be strictly supporting it. Called The Eras Tour, with a graphic featuring photos of Taylor from all 10 of her albums, the setlist will feature songs across her entire musical catalogue.

Taylor will be supported by Paramore, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, MUNA, HAIM, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams and OWENN at various dates.
