Grammy award winning country singer Lucinda Williams sat down with Elizabeth Cook at the SiriusXM Music City Theatre in Nashville for Outlaw Country to tell us about the making of her new album Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone. She also opened up about her pal, musician/songwriter, Tony Joe White, describing him as “the same onstage as he is offstage.” So, basically incredible.

Williams said White uses his quirky catchphrases even when he’s collaborating. “What did he say when he was getting ready to put some guitar on this one track? He says, ‘you want me to go put some swamp on it? You want me to put some hot sauce on it?’ So he talks just like he sings, just like he writes, it’s all that.”

Williams also discussed her cover of JJ Cale’s Magnolia, which is featured on her new album. “I was a fan of JJ Cale’s music for a long time, and it was really disheartening and sad when he passed away. So this was a tribute to him and his music.”
