In 1977, he was not only named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year but also earned a spot on the All-OVC First-Team. By the time he completed his collegiate career, Simms had amassed an impressive 5,545 passing yards and thrown 32 touchdowns, setting the stage for a future that would take him to the pinnacle of the sport.

The NFL’s Seventh Overall Pick

In 1979, Phil Simms took the next step in his football odyssey, entering the NFL as the seventh overall pick in the draft by the New York Giants. Little did anyone know at the time that this selection would set the stage for a remarkable career.

Simms went on to spend 15 years in the NFL, with the majority of his career dedicated to the New York Giants. By the time he hung up his cleats, he held a staggering 19 team records, a testament to his incredible talent and leadership on the field.

As an All-Pro quarterback, he was instrumental in leading the Giants to two Super Bowl victories, cementing his place in football history. The first of those victories came in Super Bowl XXI, where he completed an astounding 22 of 25 passes to defeat the Denver Broncos 39-20, earning himself the Super Bowl MVP honor and delivering the Giants their first Super Bowl title.

Simms would go on to lead the Giants to their second Super Bowl triumph in 1990 against the Buffalo Bills with a score of 20-19.

A Career Marked by Excellence

During his NFL career, Simms was not only selected to two Pro Bowls but also earned the prestigious title of MVP in the 1985 Pro Bowl. His list of accomplishments included being named an All-Pro in 1986, and he set numerous team records for passes completed and attempted in a single game, season, and career, as well as career touchdown passes. He was even named the League’s MVP in 1986, further solidifying his status as a true football legend.

So beloved was Simms by the New York Giants that his number 11 jersey was retired in September 1994, an honor reserved for the franchise’s all-time greats.
