The Seattle Seahawks won a Super Bowl with Russell Wilson, but that was six years ago.
Monday night, the Seahawks made Wilson the highest-paid player in the NFL with a four-year, $140-million contract extension. It’s the latest in a line big-money deals for top quarterbacks around the league.
‘Now you’ve got so much money invested in the quarterback position’
However, will the Seahawks or those other clubs see the payoff in one or more Lombardi trophies? That’s a question Charlie Weis addressed on The Opening Drive with Bill Lekas.
“Do you notice the one constant? Every time we get the so-called big contract out, Minnesota last year with (Kirk) Cousins and (Aaron) Rodgers before that, and this year with Russell Wilson, the teams don’t win the Super Bowl,” Weis said. “And one of the reasons why that happens is now you’ve got so much money invested in the quarterback position.”
‘(The Patriots) pay more guys less money, but their team will end up being better’
It is a stark contrast to what the team for which Weis formerly served as offensive coordinator, the New England Patriots, does with Tom Brady. He ranks 50th in the NFL with an average salary of $15 million.
“A team like the Patriots, you don’t hear too many guys getting these exorbitant contracts that are through the roof,” Weis said. “So you’ll have more veteran guys playing on them than a lot of other teams, because instead of paying a few guys a lot of money, they’ll pay more guys less money, but their team will end up being better. So the question then comes is which strategy is the best? I think it’s a very valid discussion point.”
‘I don’t know if any of these other methodologies work’
Weis pointed out that, given the great affinity Patriots owner Robert Kraft has for Brady, it isn’t a question of the club not wanting to pay him more. It’s a case of having enough to build a competitive team around its iconic quarterback.
“I don’t know if any of these other methodologies work, to tell you the truth, because I haven’t seen those guys winning — winning championships, anyway.”
“But there’s no arguing, with the number of championships they win, that their methodology works,” Weis said. “I don’t know if any of these other methodologies work, to tell you the truth, because I haven’t seen those guys winning — winning championships, anyway. I think it’s the one thing that always concerns me when you’re paying so much money for a few players is can you get enough players after that?
‘There isn’t a player in the league … that would be, ‘Oh, no, I have to go to New England?’
“I always felt that veteran players that were free like going to New England, even if they said they hated the Patriots when they were on the other teams. They liked going to New England because they wanted to go somewhere where they had a chance to win the championship. And there isn’t a player in the league right now, if you said, ‘Well, we’re trading you to New England,’ that would be, ‘Oh, no, I have to go to New England?’ Who would say that? I mean, there isn’t anyone would say that. They’d say, ‘Oh, really? The Patriots? Awesome!’ That’s the way they would think.”
