Everyone knows the ultimate goal. It’s the Super Bowl, of course.
But to get there, you don’t discuss your pursuit of it today, tomorrow, next week or next month.
‘It’s not looking at the end result, it’s looking at the process’
At least, the Seattle Seahawks don’t talk about it in present tense.
“Really, to get there, you can only focus on the next game,” quarterback Russell Wilson told Bruce Murray and Brady Quinn on the SiriusXM Blitz. “And, really, it’s not looking at the end result. It’s looking at the process right now and it’s looking at today, looking at what can we do better. It’s looking at, once we get through the day, it’s looking at the next day. And then that’s it. And not complicating it.”
‘It’s not looking down the road into the future’
As Wilson learned long ago, the competition in the NFL is too fierce to clog thoughts with anything else but what’s immediately in front of you. The teams that know how to handle that are usually the ones that have the best chance of going the distance.
“This is a journey that we all, every team, all 32 teams, are reaching for an hoping for,” Wilson said. “And at the end of the day, the teams that can focus on one moment at a time is the team that’s going to have the better chance to win. It’s not looking down the road into the future. That makes no sense. I think for us, we have to be in the moment.
‘Not trying to complicate things’
“The success that we have had over the past five years has really been about that and not trying to complicate things.”
