The latest installment of 88rising Radio’s series 88rising Speakers features Ruby Ibarra, a rapper and spoken word artist, in conversation with Dolly Li, an award-winning video journalist and documentarian. The insightful discussion will premiere on May 9 at 8pm ET on 88rising Radio (Ch. 305) via the SiriusXM app. You can also view full episodes on 88rising’s YouTube channel or catch up on the SiriusXM app now.

Ibarra hails from the Bay Area and released her debut album, CIRCA91, at the end of 2017, and has since toured across the United States at universities, empowerment conferences, music venues, and spaces. Li tells investigative and nuanced cultural stories about communities, from the Mississippi Delta Chinese to Korean American adoptees to global Asian diaspora. Her videos have been published on Al Jazeera, the South China Morning Post, PBS, and other outlets. Throughout their conversation, Ibarra will touch on not just being a female rapper in a male-dominated space, but also respecting and appreciating being a guest in the hip-hop scene – as well as respecting the culture from which it came. Ibarra will also discuss her passion to lift up Filipina women through her music and charity work, while inspiring others to embrace their heritage by rapping in Tagalog.
