A native son of Houston, TX, Rodney Crowell made his mark in the 1970s as a much-covered songwriter and has enjoyed an enduring career as an Outlaw Country standard-bearer.
In honor of his 72nd birthday on August 7, Outlaw Country (Ch. 60) will air a special episode of the weekly Steve Earle Show: Hardcore Troubadour Radio, as well as the exclusive broadcast of an all-star tribute concert recorded onboard the Outlaw Country Cruise 6, Stars on the Water: An Outlaw Country Cruise tribute to Rodney Crowell.
Hosted by the legendary “Road Mangler” Phil Kaufman, the 90-minute concert features performances of Crowell songs by Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Carlene Carter, Ray Benson, Albert Lee, Elizabeth Cook, Shannon McNally, Rosie Flores, Chuck Mead, Jesse Dayton and Laura Cantrell, along with a surprise Bob Dylan cover by Crowell and all-hands-on-deck finale on his Outlaw anthem “Ain’t Livin’ Long Like This.”
The Outlaw Country Cruise house band for the Stars on the Water was led by guitarist Chris Masterson (Steve Earle & The Dukes, The Mastersons), and included the Whitmore Sisters, Bonnie Whitmore on bass & Eleanor Masterson on fiddle, along with Bukka Allen on keyboards, Brady Blade on drums and David Mansfield on pedal steel guitar.
