Ray Allen on the Grizzlies? Penny Hardaway, Memphis part-owner, makes case

Almost one-quarter of the way into the 2014-15 NBA season, the greatest outside shooter in league history, Ray Allen, is still a free agent.

Rumors continue to swirl about where Allen could wind up this year should he choose to return for a 19th season, with teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs reportedly part of the conversation. Recently on SiriusXM NBA Radio, former NBA player and current Grizzlies part-owner Penny Hardaway made the case for Allen to sign up with his squad in Memphis.

“I would say outside shooting,” Hardaway said when asked what the team’s greatest weakness is. “Ray Allen comes to mind. A guy that’s out there that’s a free agent, just kind of looming to see who he wants to sign with or whatever. I’m sure a lot of teams are calling him. And I’m not trying to illegally recruit him, but if we had a shooter added to the inside presence of what’s going on, that could stretch the defense. It would be really scary for the Grizzlies.”

The Grizzlies own the NBA’s best record at 15-2, but are currently tied for 28th in three-pointers made per game (5.4), and 27th in three-point attempts per game (15). During the 2013-14 season, Allen connected on 116 of 309 three-pointers, good for 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.
