R.E.M.’s eighth studio album, Automatic for the People, was released 25 years ago and is considered by many critics to be one of the best albums of all time. The band re-released the record this month along with a deluxe anniversary edition that included 20 previously unreleased demos.

Looking back at that time, lead singer Michael Stipe sat down with VOLUME host Bill Flanagan for an episode of Written In My Soul.

Flanagan, who has known the band for many years and executive produced the 2014 documentary R.E.M. by MTV, asked Stipe about the band’s artistic integrity, how he felt performing live with R.E.M., and when the band knew it was time to call it quits, among other topics in this wide-ranging interview.
