Progress this week: Flip flopping on Berghdal, big Koch money, and Viagra vs. birth control

Have you heard the name Bowe Bergdahl? If you tuned in to SiriusXM Progress, Ch. 127, this week you couldn’t miss it. The young sergeant was finally released after being held for five years by the Taliban in Afghanistan. In exchange for five Guantanamo Bay prisoners, the last known U.S. military captive is free.

Republican politicians and conservatives who initially celebrated Bergdahl’s freedom suddenly flip-flopped, preferring to use this happy moment as a way to attack the President. Supposedly outraged over the negotiations, many of our right-wing callers echoed that sentiment. Cutting through the clatter, Make It Plain’s Mark Thompson spoke directly to White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett to discuss Bergdahl and President Obama’s duty to protect US servicemen.

Fueled by hatred of Obama, the Bowe Bergdahl attacks continued with many taking allegations of desertion as absolute fact. That fervor has even forced his home town to cancel his homecoming celebration. Michelangelo Signorile drove that point home when he spoke to a caller who knows Bowe and lives in his hometown.

In other news, climate change is still happening and the Koch brothers seem to be just fine with that. The Agenda’s Ari Rabin-Havt did an incredible interview with Professor Michael Mann the author of The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines. They discussed the EPA’s new carbon emissions standards and the epidemic of climate denial fueled by Koch money.

On the lighter side of things, Ari spoke with caller, Rich from Syracuse who shared his thoughts on why men should have coverage for Viagra and women’s reproductive health shouldn’t get covered.

Tune in next week as the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl saga continues…
