The 1980s saw disco begin to fall out of fashion with the emergence of dance, new wave and synth pop music. Heavy distortion and rampant use of the whammy bar became the trend in rock with glam metal rocketing to become the most commercially successful genre of music. Bubbling in the underground was hip-hop and contemporary R&B, which later in the decade would find its golden era. This varied mix of sounds birthed some unique Top 40 hits. Although many artists from this decade went on to create timeless hit after timeless hit, a few artists only saw their place at the top of the charts but once.
