A former member of the US Men’s National Team and now the head coach of Sporting Kansas City, Peter Vermes knows what it takes to succeed in American soccer. So it comes as little surprise that one of this year’s inductees to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame again has his team in prime position for the Major League Soccer playoffs, second place in the Eastern Conference with 52 points.

The key for the coach? Vermes told his former USMNT teammates John Harkes and Christopher Sullivan on SiriusXM FC that it’s about being “resolute in your decisions [while not having] blind faith [in them].” Vermes went on to talk about the quality of soccer in MLS.

“What’s amazing is the amount of high-level players that now want to come to the league, and it’s not when their getting ready to retire,” Vermes said. “They’re willing to come in their prime.

“Guys truly understand that not only is it probably the fastest growing market in the world, but also they realize it’s not an easy league to play in.”

Though Vermes hasn’t had much time to reflect on his Hall of Fame induction, he did explain its importance to Harkes and Sullivan.

“To get an award where someone says to you, ‘You’re being inducted into the Hall of Fame for your achievements as a player,’ obviously is a special moment,” Vermes said. “For me, just being able to be to have been a professional soccer player and now being a coach in MLS has been more than enough reward for just being a part of the game.”

Vermes’ induction will take place in front of his home crowd before the USMNT takes on Jamaica in their second-to-last World Cup Qualifier. Listen to the game on SiriusXM FC, channel 94, with coverage beginning at 4 pm ET on Counter Attack.
