The 2022 Oscar nominees are officially out and, as always, Twitter is abuzz with reactions and commentary. To help navigate all the noise, Entertainment Now (Ch. 790) host Kyle Anderson went on air to share the Academy Awards’ biggest snubs and surprises in advance of the show’s 94th iteration on March 27.

“We came through this sort of strange hybrid year in movies. 2020 was essentially a lost year at the cinema, a lot of stuff didn’t come out, and we weren’t really able to go to the movies. 2021 was this kind of hybrid year where, on the one hand, some big-event pictures did manage to come out, like Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was shut out of the Oscars, is still rocketing up on the charts as one of the most successful box-office pictures of all time, and things drew people back out to the theaters now that we have vaccines,” Anderson noted.

And these strange years for film and entertainment — with movie releases being put on hold, moviegoers’ hesitancy over returning to theaters, massive studios like Warner Brothers shifting their theatrical releases to HBO Max and, in some cases, limited viewership accessibility — have resulted in oft-confusing awards seasons. And the consequent nominations include highly lauded, critically acclaimed contenders mixed with, as Anderson succinctly described it, “some garbage.”

Nominees include The Power of the Dog (considered the “favorite” with 12 various nominations total), Paul Thomas Anderson and Licorice Pizza, Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Spielberg and West Side Story, Will Smith in King Richard, Nicholas Britell (for the Don’t Look Up score, though many know him first and foremost for the perfection that is the Succession theme), Dune, Encanto, “No Time to Die” from the film of the same name, and many more across the storied award show’s 23 categories. And while many argue that the show has lost a bit of its prestige, the chatter around nominations still remains, particularly surrounding those who did not make the cut. Most notably, after an enthusiastic press circuit and tireless Oscar campaign, Lady Gaga’s House of Gucci performance came up short. Other surprising snubs include Ben Affleck, Ruth Negga for her role in Passing, Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor in the Best Picture nominee Don’t Look Up (which in and of itself is a polarizing choice), and otherwise-celebrated Dune director Denis Villeneuve. On the opposite end of the surprise spectrum, confusion remains over Nicole Kidman’s Best Actress nom for Being the Ricardos. However, one positive surprise is Beyoncé’s first-ever Academy Award nod for “Be Alive” from the King Richard soundtrack.

SiriusXM and our entertainment hosts will be eagerly watching to see how the industry continues to evolve (and providing commentary throughout it all).
