Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, Laura Prepon, Taryn Manning, Jason Biggs, and Danielle Brooks stopped by Wake Up! With Taylor on SiriusXM Stars to talk about all things Orange Is the New Black.

Aduba, who plays Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren on the show, discussed her character’s misunderstood persona. “I do not feel like [Suzanne Warren] is crazy. I feel like she is grossly misunderstood.”

Aduba even has some questions of her own as she continues to learn more about her character. “How much of an effect does nurture and nature have on a person? Do I think she was born crazy? No, that’s my position. But, do I think that environmental circumstance might cause someone’s, say, eccentricities, to exacerbate and go beyond being quirks, but become a behavior that we just don’t understand? … I’m trying to figure out where she is.”

Cox, who plays transgender inmate Sophia Bursette on the show, discussed her role as a “dream come true” and opened up to discuss the judgement in the LGBT community. “Unfortunately, when individuals have a problem, it’s also a systemic thing ’cause we live in a culture created around a binary. Like the first question when someone is having a kid is ‘Is it a boy or a girl?,’ and the reality is it might be neither or both or we might not know yet.”

She went on to discuss the bullying she faced as a child and being chased home from school everyday by other children. “I think the kids are learning [to be judgmental] from some place.” Cox said, sharing a story about a friend of her’s who is a performer and transitioned several years ago. When the director wanted to continue using Cox’s friend in the play after her transition, the director explained to his daughter that ” … sometimes boys can become girls. And her daughter was like ‘ok!,’ and there was no judgement. When we start creating judgment around it, then that’s when we have problems. When we start stigmatizing it.”

Cox also shared that she is co-executive producing a documentary called Free CeCe about a transgender woman named CeCe McDonald who was incarcerated in a men’s prison, expected to release in 2016.

Prepon, who plays Alex Vause on Orange Is the New Black, shared details about the dynamics of her character’s relationship with Piper Chapman. “As Season One progressed, you got to see that Piper was actually totally manipulative and it’s like a two-way street. In Season Two, you’re going to see a lot more of that … That’s what’s so great about the relationship, that it’s grounded because they totally love each other, but they both play this manipulative game on each other to get this power position.”

Ever wondered what ‘Pennsatucky’s’ breath smells like? Taryn Manning, who plays Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett shared her thoughts: “[I] can’t articulate it … rotten gums, no love for a long time,” she said. Manning continued by discussing how her character’s Methamphetamine use on the show is a true example of just how detrimental the drug can be. “The teeth go first,” Manning said, as a result of the harmful combination of ingredients such as Clorox, Drano, break fluid, or the cat litter.

Jason Biggs plays the role of Larry Bloom and stopped by with his wife, Jenny Mollen, to discuss the show and their favorite characters. “It’s been amazing for me, I’m just a small part of the show. It’s been fun to watch because I can be kind of objective about the whole experience  … because I’m not as involved in the show, especially the prison … I can really watch it as a fan and it’s an amazing show.” Biggs also revealed that he is fascinated by and “loves [Manning’s] ‘Pennsatucky’ character” who is both funny and heartbreaking, while Mollen’s favorite character is George ‘Pornstache’ Mendez, played by Pablo Schreiber. “[Pornstache’] is so creepy, but he’s so good.”

Danielle Brooks, who plays Tasha ‘Taystee’ Jefferson, talked about the Orange Is the New Black audition process. “When I went in, the casting director said to me before I started, ”’Taystee’s’ lighthearted, she’s not malicious in any way.’ I already was planning on doing that … So, when she told me that, I was like ‘Oh this is perfect, this part is for me.'” Brooks also shared that her favorite character is Chang. “She just sits there in the back … She’s great, that’s my favorite character. I love her!”
