Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly addresses player arrests over weekend

Fighting Irish head coach addresses repercussions following the arrests of five players over the weekend.

August 22, 2016

It was a very bad weekend for Notre Dame football.

With less than two weeks before the Fighting Irish (ranked No. 9 in the country) take on Texas in their season opener, Ashton White, Max Redfield, Kevin Stepherson Jr., Dexter Williams and Te’Von Coney were arrested Friday night on suspicion of misdemeanor marijuana possession, according to Bleacher Report.

That wasn’t all though. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams also face a charge of possession of a handgun without a license.

In a separate incident on Saturday morning, Devin Butler was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement battery against law enforcement. On Sunday, head coach Brian Kelly announced that Redfield had been dismissed from the team, while Butler was placed on an indefinite suspension. The four other players would be subject to “disciplinary measures internal to the football program,” he said in a statement.

Shortly after the news broke, Kelly spoke to College Sports Nation about the situation and how he went about handling the disciplinary measures.

“You want them to enjoy their time here, but they’ve got to make good decisions,” Kelly said. “And if they don’t, hold them accountable for it.

“We certainly have done that,” he added.

Catch more from the Notre Dame head coach today at 5 p.m. ET on College Sports Nation on Channel 84 for the “Notre Dame Fighting Irish Camp Tour.”
