MMU in LA: Jack Antonoff on why the VMAs are like high school, Mary Lambert won’t take sides in Miley vs. Ed Sheeran + Echosmith got star-struck by Katy Perry

The Morning Mash Up is in Los Angeles this week, and they’re talking to a TON of stars.

Needless to say, this is a pretty awesome week to be in L.A., seeing as the MTV VMAs were on Sunday night and the Emmys aired one night later. Attending both award shows was Jack Antonoff of fun. and Bleachers, who stopped by the MMU to chat about everything from the VMAs feeling like high school to attending the Emmys with his girlfriend, Girls creator and star Lena Dunham.

“I loved Taylor [Swift], I loved the opening,” said Jack of the VMA performers. “I love Sam Smith. That feels, like, classic.”

Jack also commented on the high school-esque vibe surrounding award shows like the VMAs. Just like the high school cafeteria, it’s all about where you sit. “It’s just like high school. I know certain amounts of gossip, and you see people who are friends and who aren’t friends — it’s just like a big clique. You go further and further up the seats, and it gets weirder and weirder.”

When speaking about Bleachers, Jack expressed ongoing surprise that his side project has gained a following.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know if people are gonna want to hear the album or go to the set. It’s sort of like coming out of a situation of abuse. Like training my dog. You do one festival, there’s like a ton of people there, you’re like, OK, maybe that was a fluke. Then you do another one, and it happens again … I think we’re finally at a point where we’re like, ‘people are enjoying this.'”

Later, Same Love singer Mary Lambert popped by to chat with the MMU about attending the VMAs, skipping out early to play L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl, and how she won’t choose sides regarding Miley Cyrus’ alleged beef with Ed Sheeran.

“I was glad that there wasn’t anything TOO crazy that happened,” said Mary of the VMAs. “I had to leave halfway through, which I was kind of bummed about. I felt like a jerk, but I was performing at the Hollywood Bowl for The Beatles celebration.”

In regards to Miley Cyrus calling Ed Sheeran an a**hole at the VMAs (the redheaded singer has said a few unflattering things about Miley’s twerking in the past), Mary took the diplomatic route.

“I love Ed [Sheeran], Ed and I are friends, and I will not choose sides.”

Finally, Mary name-dropped fellow MMU guests Echosmith as a band she’s currently listening to. “I’m a huge fan. I listen to their album, I think it’s such a phenomenal album.”

And speaking of Echosmith, lead singer Sydney Sierota gushed over a few famous faces she met at the VMAs. “I ended up meeting Taylor Swift and Katy Perry! It was crazy to just meet them, but the crazier part was that they already knew who I was. Katy says, ‘Cool kids, I want to be like them!’ I just didn’t know what to say. I was kind of freaking out.”
