The way the season started, the Los Angeles Chargers had no business thinking they would be contending for the division championship.
Yet, at 6-6, that’s exactly where they find themselves in the AFC West, tied at the top with the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders.
‘It’s crazy, it’s crazy’
These are the same Chargers that began the season 0-4. But after winning six of their last eight games, including their third in a row with last Sunday’s 19-10 triumph against the winless Cleveland Browns (whose only victory in their last 28 games came against the Chargers last year), they are surging.
“It’s crazy, it’s crazy,” running back Melvin Gordon told Zig Fracassi on NFL Rewind.
‘It was kind of looking like, ‘Oh, shucks, here we go again”
“The crazy first four games we had starting. It was kind of just looking like, ‘Oh, shucks, here we go again.’ From that to us having an opportunity to still be in it is just delightful.”
Still, if the Chargers have any hope of building upon their success, they need to generate more offense than they did against the Browns. The Chargers only had one touchdown and three field goals.
‘We just have to learn to put seven on the board instead of three’
“We weren’t too bad driving,” Gordon said. “We were driving the whole game, but the thing is, we weren’t finishing. That’s just been an Achilles heal. We’ve got to learn how to finish, because we get down there, we drive all the time. We just have to learn to put seven on the board instead of three.”
