The Pittsburgh Pirates offense has relied heavily on third baseman Pedro Alvarez this postseason. In five playoff games, Alvarez has six RBI, including at least one in each game. St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny joined SiriusXM’s MLB Network Radio and talked about his team’s approach in Wednesday’s decisive Game 5, specifically toward Alvarez.

It’s a good lineup, it’s pretty well stacked. You start messing too much around (Alvarez), and you’ve got Russell Martin who’s also driven in some runs. They’ve got some things covered. It’s just a matter of us executing our game plan, the guys making their pitches, and then the defense making the plays behind them to hopefully keep runs from scoring.

Matheny told Inside Pitch’s Casey Stern and Jim Bowden that his team is fueled by the players’ camaraderie.

“One of the things that’s impressed me most about our guys is how they’re so much about team,” Matheny said. “Every at-bat that these guys take they’re coming back and talking to the other players […] it’s constantly in motion.”

Listen to the Cardinals broadcast for Game 5 on Mad Dog Sports Radio, and the Pirates broadcast on Sirius channel 209 and XM channel 89.
