Mark Dominik thinks Texans should place a call to Tony Romo

Given the limited options to replace Deshaun Watson as the Houston Texans’ quarterback, Mark Dominik thinks it would make sense for the team to reach out to one who is sitting in a broadcast booth.

Given the limited options to replace Deshaun Watson as the Houston Texans’ quarterback, Mark Dominik thinks it would make sense for the team to reach out to one who is sitting in a broadcast booth.

That’s right. Tony Romo, halfway through his first season as the top NFL game analyst for CBS, is Dominik’s pick to save the Texans in the wake of the season-ending knee injury Watson suffered in practice last Thursday.

‘What’s the worst he says? No?’

“It’s worth a call,” the former NFL general manager told Bruce Murray on the SiriusXM Blitz. “What’s the worst he says? No? I’d make the call, at least, to Tony Romo and say, ‘Do you want to come to Houston and play?’ If he says no, then, fine, you can cross it off your book.

“But if I was the general manager and I go to (Texans owner) Mr. (Bob) McNair, I’d say, ‘Hey, look, here’s one of the things I’m thinking about doing. I just want your blessing.’ But I do think it’s worth a call to a quarterback like Tony Romo, because 9-7 is going to win this division.”

‘Tom Savage is going to end you up at 6-10 or 7-9’

Dominik doesn’t think Tom Savage, who will start in Watson’s place for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, is capable of getting the Texans to nine wins.

“I just think that Tom Savage is going to end you up at 6-10 or 7-9,” Dominik said.

‘The only other thing I would do is hit the practice squads pretty hard’

If Romo isn’t interested, the former Tampa Bay GM said he’d “explore the Colin Kaepernick world,” understanding that that’s probably my only shot.

“The only other thing I would do is hit the practice squads pretty hard right now and maybe I go grab a young quarterback and see what he could do,” Dominik said. “It’s devastating, but I think you’ve got to go after a quarterback you think gives you a chance to still win this year.”
