Lukas Nelson caught the eye of Bradley Cooper during Desert Trip 2016. He was playing in Neil Young’s backing band that night, and Cooper was so impressed with Nelson’s abilities and stage presence that he contracted him to be a music consultant on the forthcoming remake of A Star Is Born, which he was directing and starring in. Eventually, the chemistry he had with both Cooper and Lady Gaga led to a bigger role for Nelson and his band Promise of the Real, who ended up serving as Cooper’s onscreen backing band.

Outlaw Country caught up with Nelson backstage at the 2018 Stagecoach Festival, the same grounds where he played Desert Trip, and Nelson dished on what it’s like appearing on the big screen, the importance of the film, and his relationship with Cooper and Gaga.

A Star Is Born, the remake of the 1954 musical film starring Judy Garland and James Mason, is due out in theaters Oct. 5.

You can hear music from Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real on Outlaw Country (Ch. 60).
