INDIANAPOLIS — The futures of two players who have been key members of the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense, outside linebacker Justin Houston and safety Eric Berry, could go a long way toward being decided during this week’s NFL Scouting Combine.

Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach is doing what his fellow team executives do while evaluating the college talent here: talking about potential trades.

‘You have 32 head coaches, every GM, every personnel member, and you’re all stuck in like two or three different hotels’

And rumors continue to circulate that the Chiefs, with new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo installing a different scheme than was previously in place, could be adjusting their personnel accordingly.

“During this week when you have 32 teams here, you have 32 head coaches, every GM, every personnel member, and you’re all stuck in like two or three different hotels, you’re going to end up talking about every single player on your roster,” Veach told Bruce Murray and Brady Quinn on the SiriusXM Blitz.

‘There’s a lot of information that you’ll get here across the league’

But Veach said there was no particular rush to make a move.

“You get with Steve (Spagnuolo) and you kind of put the game plan together. We’ve had a lot of great initial discussions.”

“There’s still a lot of time,” he. “I know it doesn’t seem like it, but for us there is because there’s a lot of information that you’ll get here across the league and there’s a lot of information that you can use with the upcoming draft and how you blend those together. And then you get with Steve and you kind of put the game plan together. We’ve had a lot of great initial discussions, certainly, and what he wants to do in his scheme.

‘At the end of the day, our job is to acquire and maintain as many great players as we can and certainly those two are great players’

“I think, as we get closer, we’ll be able to finalize things. But at the end of the day, our job is to acquire and maintain as many great players as we can and certainly those two are great players. But this league, the information never stops. You collect what you can and you make the best decisions for the team.”
