The top two contenders for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship joined SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Thursday before meeting on the track one final time this season.

Jimmie Johnson leads Matt Kenseth by 28 points with one race to go. Johnson is chasing his sixth championship, and Kenseth is hoping to add a second title after winning the last “pre-Chase” championship in 2003.

Johnson joined Jim Noble and Chocolate Myers on Tradin’ Paint and commented on the pressure that comes along with leading the points standings heading into the final race of the season.

I’m happy to be where I’m at.  The points lead is what all drivers want to have coming into this race, even if its one (point), you just want control of the championship. We control our own destiny, it’s a great position to be in but its also the situation with the most pressure. There’s always a consequence for something and we have the most pressure on us this weekend for sure.

When asked about the historical significance of winning his sixth Sprint Cup championship, Johnson said, “I know what works for me and I know that I need to chase those thoughts out of my mind and try to keep things in a mental space, an emotional space like I would any other week.  Believe me: That’s far easier said than done.”

Kenseth also commented on his season thus far with Jim Noble and Chocolate Myers on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s Tradin’ Paint.

As the season went on, the way we started the Chase with a couple wins and led the points for five or six weeks, all of a sudden your goals and expectations start changing to be like, ‘We have to finish this off, we have to win this championship’ … I think when we get done Sunday if we don’t end up winning it I think we’ll be a little disappointed because I thought we had a real good seven out of nine weeks, had a couple weeks where we didn’t finish as good as we wanted to, and if you come up short you’ll always be a little disappointed.  On the other side of that, I don’t think any of us saw this coming with all the wins that we had this year, all the laps that we led, the position we’ve been in to win some races when we had trouble, a couple poles.  It’s just been an incredible season no matter where we end up Sunday.
