It’s only April, but tempers flared at summer temperatures on Sunday afternoon as the Pirates and Brewers engaged in a benches-clearing brawl.

Brewers’ center fielder Carlos Gomez‘s admiring of what he thought was a home run off Pirates’ Gerrit Cole – it wound up being a triple – ignited the fireworks. Cole did not take kindly to the gesture at home plate, and had words for Gomez upon his third base arrival. After that, it was on.

MLB Network Radio’s Jim Bowden reacted to fracas on Inside Pitch and, while he wasn’t a fan of the showboating, Bowden had some strong words for Cole.

This is my response: Make a pitch! Make a pitch! You’re the one who gave up the triple that could have been a home run. Make a pitch and shut up. Look yourself in the mirror. You’re the guy that threw the pitch. You didn’t get him out. He beat you. So you shut up.

Bowden continued the discussion with co-host Casey Stern, and said there was a lack of leadership and discipline on the field that made the fight worse.

“You’re supposed to break it up. This isn’t a war. This isn’t a bar room brawl at 3:30 in the morning. This is baseball.” Bowden said. “Two guys got upset. Some punches were thrown. You’re supposed to be a peacemaker.”
