In a recent interview during SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Training Camp Tour, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh shared thoughts on his collaborative relationship with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the outlook of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
Having transitioned from developing young quarterbacks in his first two years with the Jets to coaching Aaron Rodgers, Robert Saleh stressed the invaluable learning experience he is gaining from the veteran quarterback. He emphasized that age or experience should not limit the wisdom one can gain from others, referring to Rodgers’ vast knowledge and unique perspectives as a quarterback with 19 years of experience.
“This dude has been in the league 19 years. He’s played quarterback for 19 years. You’re telling me he doesn’t know more than 75 percent of coaches in football. So, of course, I’m going to ask him,” said Saleh. “It’s like I’m talking to another coach… [if] I’m gonna go to that 30 year old [coach] and ask his opinion, why the hell wouldn’t I ask a 39-year-old who has bullets being shot at [him] the time?”
Coach Hackett, the Jets’ offensive coordinator and former head coach of the Denver Broncos, received high praise from Saleh for his exceptional character and work ethic since joining the Jets.
Despite the challenges and criticism that came with transitioning from a head coach to a coordinator, Hackett has embraced the opportunity to lead the Jets’ offense. His rapport with players and the desire to prove himself as an outstanding football coach has earned him admiration from both teammates and new additions like Aaron Rodgers.
“He wanted to get back on the horse and get back to work and prove to himself… [prove to] anybody who doubts him that he’s a hell of a football coach and he is. I mean, players love him,” said Saleh.
“There’s a reason why Aaron wanted to come here and a lot of it’s because of Hackett,” he added. “There’s a reason why [Allen Lazard] and [Randall Cobb] and Billy Turner, and all the guys who… just love and adore him want to come here and there’s more people that want to come.”
