It only took part of an offseason together on their new team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, for free safety Tashaun Gipson to see something special in rookie cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Gipson, whom the Jaguars signed in free agency, says Ramsey, a first-round draft pick from Florida State, reminds him a lot of a top-tier corner with whom he played on his previous team, the Cleveland Browns: Joe Haden.
“If you check the presence of Jalen, one thing that you will know that is the guy seems like he’s a five-year veteran,” Gipson told Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan on Movin’ The Chains Thursday. “And one thing is that he walked in this locker room feeling he was the best. Those are the type of cornerbacks that I truly love playing with. I had the pleasure of playing with a guy in Cleveland, Joe Haden, and I have nothing but respect for his game and I know that he’s definitely one of the best.
“And that’s the kind of guy he reminds me of, a Joe Haden, where he just demands that respect. You know when Jalen’s in the room because his presence and just his understanding about the game. I love the dude, I love his game and I love his understanding.”
Gipson points out that Ramsey’s swagger shouldn’t be confused for cockiness. He says the rookie knows he has to earn his way.
“It’s not like he comes in the room and says, ‘I’m a high draft pick,’” Gipson said. “He understands there’s going to be competition, he understands that he’s got to work. He’s always talking to me, trying to pick my brain, (saying), ‘Hey, what do you see right here if we were to run this coverage, how do you think it’ll play out.’
“And one of the things that I see in him is that he’s eager to learn and one thing about him is that I don’t think that the stage is going to be too bright for him. I think he’s going to fall right in place. As soon as those lights come on, as soon as Sept. 11th (the date of the season-opener against Green Bay (gets here), as soon as he’s ready to get out there and play, I think that dude is going to be an amazing athlete. And it’s going to be my pleasure playing with him. He’s going to have a safety that’s got his back.”
