With cinematic gems like Boyhood and Birdman and historical snapshots like The Imitation Game and Selma in the mix, the 2015 Academy Awards are anybody’s game.

Well, maybe except for the category of Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Entertainment Weekly’s Jess Cagle was raving about J.K. Simmons’ performance in Whiplash before Simmons even took home the Golden Globe (and the SAG Award).

With Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo and idol Robert Duvall sharing the same nomination category, Simmons is far less presumptuous than, say, anyone who has seen Whiplash might be. Simmons appeared on the Howard Stern show today to talk Whiplash, acceptance speech prep, and who he would be okay with losing to on the big day.

“Who do you think should get it if you don’t get it? Who would you vote for?” Howard asked.

“There’s none of those guys that doesn’t deserve it, and you can keep on going. You could list Christoph Waltz and Josh Brolin and a lot of guys who have had remarkable performances this year in movies,” Simmons said. “Robert Duvall is one of my all-time, great idols.”

Simmons is quick to praise Whiplash’s leading man Miles Teller and filmmaker Damien Chazelle.

“Damien Chazelle…this kid is a remarkable, genius of a filmmaker,” Simmons said.
