Myles Garrett provided a little intrigue about his role as a rookie edge rusher for the Cleveland Browns this season.
During an interview with Alex Marvez and Gil Brandt on Late Hits, the top overall pick of the NFL Draft was asked which side he was working on during offseason practices.
“I may play both,” Garrett responded.
‘They expect me to go out there and go pedal to the metal’
The former Texas A&M standout says the Browns’ coaches have told him to play with no inhibitions. They want Garrett to avoid being too caught up in doing things perfectly and just rely on his considerable physical skills.
“They expect me to go out there and go pedal to the metal,” Garrett said. “(They say), ‘Don’t be thinking about it too much. You’re going to make some mental mistakes. Go out there and give it your all, and we’ll work on the playbook as we go.’ It’s my job to be focusing on that and go out there and make plays.”
‘Bruce Smith told me that I need to focus on some things that will help me not be tardy off the ball’
He has gotten pieces of advice from the outside as well. Two of the most memorable came from Hall-of-Fame defensive end Bruce Smith and former receiving great Randy Moss.
“Bruce Smith told me that I need to focus on some things that will help me not be tardy off the ball,” Garrett said. “He’s maybe top two, top three best ever pass-rushers and one of the greatest players of all time. And just to hear that from him, I know that’s going to ring true. So I’ve got to focus on that in games and while I’m watching film, just pick up on those keys so I can get off the ball a little bit quicker.
‘Randy Moss … just told me never to lose my love for the game’
“And Randy Moss, I had the pleasure of speaking with him. And he just told me never to lose my love for the game. It may turn into a business, but don’t let the fun escape from you. Don’t let it leave you as you are focused on a billion things because everything else will come as long as you are focused on the game and having fun.”
