Forget Mount Rushmore: Coach K says John Wooden deserves ‘one mountain’

Following Duke’s win over Wisconsin, five-time NCAA champion Mike Krzyzewski joined Chris Russo for an interview on Mad Dog Sports Radio.

Coach K – who will host a new episode of his weekly SiriusXM show, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K, Thursday at 6 pm ET on SiriusXM College Sports Nation – spoke with Russo about what it means to be mentioned among the great coaches in basketball history.

“Well, it means I’ve been a lucky guy to be at Duke and get the kind of kids that can win,” Krzyzewski said. “You know, no coach wins without great players or being at a place that would attract great players. And then, it is what you are fortunate enough to do when you have those great players.”

Russo also noted that Krzyzewski is second to John Wooden in NCAA championships.

“I always hear these things about ‘Mount Rushmore’ and who is on or whatever,” Krzyzewski said. “I think there should be about 20 faces on Mount Rushmore. But there should only be one mountain for Coach Wooden. … To even be mentioned with Coach Wooden is a tremendous compliment, but I’m realistic about that. I know what he did and that’s not going to be matched. But that’s fine. I’m really happy with what we’ve done.”

Mad Dog and Coach K also spoke about Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan’s postgame comments. Ryan took the officials to task for their performance in the final.
