From Modena to the Met Opera, legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti arrived in NYC 50 years ago to perform at the famed opera house. In honor of Pavarotti’s Met Opera debut on Nov. 23, 1968, Met Opera Radio (Ch. 75) is rebroadcasting some of the late Italian singer’s most memorable moments.
Pavarotti, who passed away in 2007, sang 378 performances of 20 roles with the company. Tune in to Met Opera Radio this week to hear his emotional portrayals in the bel canto masterpieces I Puritani and L’Elisir d’amore, and heroic singing in Giuseppe Verdi’s Ernani and Un Ballo in Maschera. The channel will also present a 1973 broadcast of Gaetano Donizetti’s comedy La Fille du Régiment, featuring a dazzling Pavarotti as the young lover Tonio, the role that earned him his title as “King of the High Cs.”
