Just when you thought the soccer world had forgotten about Landon Donovan’s omission from the U.S. soccer team, Dax McCarty revealed a noteworthy observation on SiriusXM FC’s Over the Ball.

“My personal opinion was that Landon was the best player in January camp,” McCarty, a midfielder for the New York Red Bulls and invitee to that USA January camp, told Kevin Flynn and Grayle Howlett. “I mean, he was fantastic.”

“Being in with Jurgen [Klinsmann] for the first time, you know, you get used to his tactics and his ideas and his thought processes,” McCarty said of playing for the Team USA head coach. “Every coach is different, so I know a lot of people were surprised with his roster choices, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t as well.”

Despite his thoughts on Donvan, though, McCarty told Flynn and Howlett that he is confident as the U.S. begins play in what is viewed as the “Group of Death,” Group G, on Monday.

“I think the warm-up games have shown that Jurgen has confidence in this team, and I think that we should have confidence as well in them,” McCarty said. “We’re in a tough group, but I think that’s the best part of being American, is that I think sometimes we thrive when put in the underdog role, and that’s certainly something that’s gonna happen in the World Cup.”
