Christopher Sullivan: Manchester United midfield is ‘ultra vanilla’

Sir Alex Ferguson turned Manchester United into a global soccer power. Even though “Fergie” isn’t at the helm at Old Trafford anymore, the expectations are still sky-high.

But three losses in the first six games of the Barclays Premier League season, plus a recent draw in the UEFA Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk, has driven fans of the iconic club mad.

Christopher Sullivan — Champions League expert, former US Men’s National Team midfielder, and one of the newest SiriusXM FC hosts — points to a lack of creativity in the midfield as the primary cause for the Red Devils’ struggles.

“They’re midfield is ultra vanilla,” Sullivan said. “About as vanilla as you can get. I mean this is Manchester United. This is one of the best clubs in the world in the last decade. And when I look at them, I see a very vanilla team with [Robin] Van Perise and Wayne Rooney. That’s it.”

Sullivan also told John Harkes and Tony Meola what Barcelona needs to compete against the defending UCL champs, Bayern Munich, on SiriusXM FC’s Counter Attack.
