Chester Bennington of Linkin Park dies at age 41

Chester Bennington has died at age 41, according to the Los Angeles coroner. The AP reports that Bennington’s death is being investigated as an apparent suicide. The singer-songwriter had been the frontman of Linkin Park since 1999. He is survived by six children.

Linkin Park emerged in 2000 with the album Hybrid Theory, which separated the band from the nu-metal pack. Their sound blended elements of metal, hip-hop, alternative and industrial-rock with the vocal interplay of Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda. By 2012, Hybrid Theory had been sold 10 million times, earning it the coveted Diamond rating by the Record Industry Association of America. After their debut, Linkin Park went on to record six additional albums and collaborate with Jay-Z on 2004’s chart-topping Collision Course EP.
