Celebrate Earth Day with Neil deGrasse Tyson and more very smart people

Insight host Pete Dominick surrounded himself with some pretty smart folks to celebrate Earth Day, tackle the grim realities of our endangered planet and discuss cow farts. More on that in a sec.

First, take a gander at this panel: Astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, former Prime Minister of Australia the Honorable Kevin Rudd, climate scientist at Columbia University Dr. Radley Horton and COO of Global Citizen Liza Henshaw.

Now that you’re impressed, let’s get back to the cow farts. They’re a problem.

“Over the course of a year, [cow farts] are something like 70 times as powerful” as CO2 emissions, Dr. Horton said. Burgers were a bad choice.

This event wasn’t a total lovefest. An audience member identified himself as “one of these dreaded climate skeptics.” Dr. Horton told him to stop worrying about another ice age and acknowledge the reality of the damage humans are doing to the planet.

“Sir, you should not confuse being a ‘skeptic’ with being in denial,” Neil deGrasse Tyson added. “A ‘skeptic’ actually follows evidence when they look carefully. There’s enough evidence for you to actually no longer be a skeptic. To be in denial of what the science is saying just makes you a science denier.”

“When people want to debate the science with you, how do you generally handle that?” Pete Dominick asked Dr. Tyson.

“I don’t,” the astrophysicist said. “I wrote what was essentially a op-ed called What Science Is — and How and Why It Works. And in that piece it tells you what it means when there’s an emergent scientific truth … It’s not that you have scientists agreeing on what is true. Scientists are just humans … What matters is the results of observations and experiments.”

Basically, just play this clip next Thanksgiving when your great uncle lectures you about the liberal media conspiracy:

We also took some time to get to know Dr. Tyson and his favorite parts of our amazing planet. Highlights: Best ocean is Arctic Ocean (duh), he has STRONG opinions about pizza, bacteria rules and we may not be the greatest threat to Earth. Oh, and Pete Dominick definitely asked about the mustache.

Check out more highlights below and hear the entire Earth Day special on Friday, April 22nd at 6pm ET on SiriusXM Insight (Ch. 121).
