Braden Gall’s Week 13 Heisman Trophy Watch: Mariota cruises to the lead

Following a great 13th week of college football action, SiriusXM College Sports Nation host Braden Gall ranked his top five players to watch for the Heisman Trophy:

5. Amari Cooper, Alabama wide receiver – Cooper bruised his knee during a 48-14 win over Western Carolina but will rest up for this weekend’s Iron Bowl matchup with Auburn.

Arguably the best player in the nation at any position, the record-setting receiver has delivered in a big way in every big moment of the season.

4. Brett Hundley, UCLA quarterback – his three touchdowns led the Bruins to their third straight win over Los Angeles rivals USC.

The Bruins QB is surging at the right time and can lead his team to a division crown. He’s numbers are excellent considering his lack of supporting cast.

3.  Dak Prescott, Mississippi State quarterback – Prescott threw for three touchdowns in the 51-0 shutout of SEC opponent Vanderbilt in Week 13. He’ll look to cement a spot in the inaugural College Football Playoff this weekend in the Egg Bowl against in-state rival Ole Miss.

The greatest signal caller in school history has big numbers and one last chance to make his case against a ranked arch-rival on the road.

2.  Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin running back – one week after setting the single game rushing record (which was then broken by Oklahoma’s Samaje Perrine this week), Gordon was back at it again rushing for 200 yards and two touchdowns to beat Iowa 26-24 in Week 13.

The best tailback during the year of the tailback is doing things people in college football have never done before.

1. Marcus Mariota, Oregon quarterback – the Ducks defeated Pac-12 opponent Colorado 44-10 behind Mariota’s three touchdowns.

From every possible angle, Mariota is the consummate Heisman Trophy candidate. He has the numbers, the wins and is as impressive off the field as he is on it.
