Brad Hopkins’ Week 14 Heisman Trophy Watch: Melvin Gordon rushes his way to top

SiriusXM College Sports Nation analyst Brad Hopkins is a two-time Pro Bowl player with the Tennessee Titans who played college football at Illinois. Hopkins ranked his top five players to watch for the Heisman Trophy following the 14th week of regular season action:

5. Amari Cooper, Alabama wide receiver – Alabama defeated Auburn 55-44 in the Iron Bowl behind Cooper’s three touchdowns.

Receivers winning the Heisman are a stretch, but not this one.

4. Trevone Boykin, TCU quarterback – Boykin’s three touchdowns (one rushing, two passing) led TCU over Texas 48-10 last week. The win jumped them up to the No. 3 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings.

The Horned Frogs being legit is real, and he is the reason why.

3. Jameis Winston, Florida State quarterback – despite his four interceptions, the Seminoles knocked off Florida 24-19 in Week 14 and will face Georgia Tech in this weekend’s ACC Championship.

Off-field issues aside, he is the coolest player under pressure playing college football right now.

2.  Marcus Mariota, Oregon quarterback – the junior’s four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns led the Ducks to a win in the Civil War rivalry with Oregon State. Mariota looks to avenge the only loss for Oregon this season to Arizona in the upcoming Pac-12 championship game on Friday night.

He alone keeps the Ducks’ and the Pac-12’s hopes alive for a national title this weekend with the conference championship.

1. Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin running back – he helped knock off ranked Big Ten foe Minnesota in Week 14 and will now try to lead the Badgers in the Big Ten conference championship against Ohio State.

He’s the perfect combination of speed and power, and the tradition of terrific Badger running backs continues.
