Tempers flared in Toronto Sunday afternoon after Kansas City Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez was warned in the first inning for hitting third basemen Josh Donaldson with a pitch, and then walking toward home plate. The intensity grew two innings later when Volquez ran another pitch inside that nearly plunked Donaldson again, which led to the two players having words on the field.

Later in the game, benches cleared – Blue Jays reliever Aaron Sanchez was ejected for hitting Alcides Escobar – an event MLB Network Radio’s Steve Phillips thinks could have been avoided if the umpire ejected Volquez earlier in the game.

“That pitch was not a two-seamer that got away from Edison Volquez, he threw at Josh Donaldson,” Phillips said. “The team that was the victim, the Blue Jays, they lose a pitcher in Sanchez, he’ll be suspended, their manager John Gibbons was ejected from the game and he came back on the field in the ninth when there was the brawl, he’s now going to get suspended too. That’s not right.”
