Behind the scenes at TODAY: Matt Lauer describes his (very early) morning routine

You think you’re up early? Well, TODAY host Matt Lauer beats the sunrise every weekday, getting to work around 4:45 am ET to begin his day. “I’m quick in the morning, I’m at work by 4:45. And then I get into the kind of preliminaries of the show. I read the papers, I read the wires, I start on segments that I haven’t looked at the night before. We’re in makeup at six, I’m on the set at six thirty doing promos for affiliates around the country and we go on the air at seven, he recently told SiriusXM’s TODAY Show Radio host Jessica Ettinger.

And as if his jam-packed morning wasn’t enough, Lauer continues after the show doing the “domestics of the job” before eventually making the time to get to the gym,

The experienced host also shared how he prepares for guest interviews. “Whether it’s an interview with the Secretary of State or an interview with Martha Stewart making curtains out of bed sheets, I tend to do the homework. And I do it only because I hate to be out there and not knowing what the hell I’m talking about,” Lauer said. “It’s important for me to know [a guest’s] subject as well as they know their subject.”
