The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, MA, the birthplace of basketball where the sport was first introduced in 1891 by physical education instructor James Naismith. The Hall officially opened in 1968, but when stars like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan pushed the sport into mainstream popularity, the Hall moved into a larger facility in 1985, with three levels dedicated to basketball history. However, after basketball celebrated its centennial anniversary and the introduction of the WNBA, its growing popularity once again forced the Hall into a new 40,000 square foot location in 2002, including an Honors Ring that overlooks Center Court. It is now home to nearly 300 inductees.
