Giants safety (and soon-to-be free agent) Antrel Rolle was on the phone with The Opening Drive on SiriusXM NFL Radio Wednesday when news of defensive coordinator Perry Fewell’s firing broke. He reacted live, saying he was “shocked.”

I really don’t know what to say. We didn’t have the best of the best year as a defense, but I think it definitely had more to do than just Coach Fewell. I have a theory — coaches coach, and players play the game. If we were unsuccessful at times, in my eyes the majority had to do with the players not making plays when the opportunity presented itself, and being a consistent defense throughout the course of the year. Everyone is at fault — we all understand that in this league — when the defense is unsuccessful. But I figured that he would be back, given that we have some of the people on IR. Just give him the chance to make the wrong, right. But you know, things happen in this league, and as a professional, you have to accept it.

Rolle added that he didn’t know what to expect about Fewell’s future.

“I just wish Perry Fewell the best, and I’m sorry, as a defense, that we didn’t do a good enough job to keep him around.”
