Taylor Swift is a global pop icon. 5 Seconds of Summer’s Michael Clifford plays guitar in one of the biggest bands on the pop scene today. Shouldn’t the two be a perfect fit?

At least that’s what Clifford was thinking when he approached Swift at party she hosted last year – a story he shared while the band appeared on The Howard Stern Show.

“It was like an attempt to talk to her but she never replied,” Clifford said. “I was like, ‘Hey, I’ll talk to Taylor Swift. I’m cool.’ And I was drunk, and I was like, ‘Hey, what up, Tay-Tay?'”

Why didn’t she reply?

“She’s Taylor Swift, and I’m stage right of 5 Seconds of Summer. Come on.”

Clifford, Ashton Irwin, Luke Hemmings and Calum Hood also opened up to Howard about why none of them feel an urge to go solo.

“If you listen to our recent album, Sounds Good Feels Good, you’ll hear different types of songs, and that’s because we all have creative freedom in this band,” Irwin said. “Me and Luke wrote the last song on the album .It’s called Carry On, and it sounds like it’s just a choir. And Calum and Mike, they accepted that. They were like, ‘OK, lets end the album on a big choir vocal.'”
