Two new Tim McGraw songs hit the airwaves this week: “Neon Church” and “Thought About You.” The singer-songwriter tells The Highway‘s Storme Warren about the new singles in an exclusive interview.

McGraw just wrapped up a two-year tour with his wife of 22 years, country artist Faith Hill. After performing 120 shows together, he’s still in awe of his wife’s talent and says that the experience directly influenced him as an artist.

“To me, she’s one of the top singers in any genre of music in the world,” McGraw says. “Every night I’m a NASCAR trying to keep up with an IndyCar.”

In other words, he’s a stalwart performer who often sings his songs in the tried-and-true way, and she’s a nimble, versatile, turbocharged singer.

“Singing harmony with her is one of the hardest things in the world to do because she never sings the song the same way,” McGraw confesses. He’s grateful for the challenge, though, not just on stage but in the recording studio, too.

“It always makes me a better singer to sing with her, and it really pushes my vocal ability and helps me find new places. And I think that reflects on this record.”

The question on everyone’s mind: What else can we expect from the new record?

The new single Neon Church draws a comparison between a bar illuminated by glowing neon and church. McGraw explains that both some of the happiest and saddest moments of your life happen at church and similarly “at a bar, you’re either having a great time or drowning your sorrows.”

The church permeates McGraw’s second single, “I Thought About You,” as well. As Warren explains, “There’s a lot of redemption in”Thought About You.” There’s a lot of redemption in “Angel Boy.” There’s a lot of redemption in your life … How much does that word impact your life on a daily basis?”
