The Dean Obeidallah Show: Live July 4th special featuring Muslims serving the United States

A Muslim Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army? A Muslim member of the US Congress? A Muslim working in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security?!

Yep, and those will be the very types of people I’ll be featuring on my live 4th of July special that will showcase American Muslims who are-or who have- served our country.

I bet most aren’t aware of how many Muslim Americans are currently serving as elected officials, proudly serving in our military and in our police forces, or who are part of our federal, state and local governments. Well, my show Saturday will give you a glimpse into some of the people doing just that.

The guests on this special episode of my show include Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), who was the first Muslim elected to Congress when he won his seat in 2006. (There are actually two Muslims in Congress now, Ellison and Rep. Andre Carson.)

I’ll also be joined by Lieutenant Colonel Shareda Hosein, who has served for 33 years in the U.S. Army in both active duty and in the reserves. Plus, my guests include Mansoor Shams, a former US Marine (if there is such a thing as a “former Marine”), who had first wanted to join the Navy, but felt compelled to be part of “The few, the proud, the Marines …”

I’m also excited to welcome to the show from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Haris Tarin, who serves as a senior policy advisor at the Department of Homeland Security office. Yep, there are Muslims in the DHS who are working to ensure our nation’s safety.

And there are numerous Muslims who serve in local government. I will be joined by two: Councilman Mohammed Hameeduddin from Teaneck, New Jersey, who also served in the past as mayor of that municipality and Umair Khan,  an aide to Letitia “Tish” James, The Public Advocate for the City of New York.

So I hope you will join us for this one of a kind live show this Saturday at 10 am to Noon ET on SiriusXM Insight (Ch. 121). And please feel free to call in with questions for these Muslim Americans serving our nation.

Best wishes for a great July 4th Weekend!

My show airs live every Saturday at 10am to noon ET on SiriusXM Insight (Ch 121) and repeats several times over the weekend. It is also available On Demand. Hope you check it out and better yet give us a call during the show to “Ask a Muslim” a question, discuss issues of the week or even be contestant on our weekly segment “Name That Religion.” And as always, I want to be your Muslim friend – so if you don’t have one follow me on Twitter at @deanofcomedy and I’ll follow you back or ask me questions at
